What is Recognition of Prior Learning?

What is Recognition of Prior Learning?
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process where students use their existing knowledge, skills and experiences (gained through life experiences and/or other employment or previous qualifications) to demonstrate their competency in particular unit/s. When a student applies for an RPL, he/she is essentially saying 'I already know all about this unit so I do not need training'. The student is then required to demonstrate his/her knowledge and skills in the unit by completing the RPL documents before being awarded competency in the unit. Each unit is assessed independently, unless otherwise stated.

I've heard RPL is a faster way to finish my course. Is that true?
Definitely! However, it is only faster if you already have the skills and knowledge needed to complete the unit.
If you are assessed as not having the skills and knowledge after completing the RPL document, then you may need to complete the full unit.
If you find that you are having to spend an inordinate amount of time researching and investigating the information, then completing the unit, where all the information is provided for you, would be the better option.

I've heard RPL is less expensive. Is that true?
Yes. Since you're not paying for training, RPL is less expensive than a unit.

I've heard RPL is an easier way to finish my course. Is that true?
Yes, but it is only easier if you already have the skills and knowledge required. You will need to answer questions, provide evidence of your knowledge and demonstrate your skills in your workplace.

What happens if I decide to do an RPL but then discover that I do not have the knowledge and skills needed?
You will need to discuss this with the AATS Principal and/or your Trainer. You may be required to pay in full for the unit. Your enrolment will be transferred from an RPL to a unit.
