Education Support Qualifications
These qualifications cover workers in a range of education settings, including public and independent schools and community education settings that provide assistance and support to teachers and learners under broad based supervision. Education Support workers work closely with teachers, collecting and/or developing teaching resources, setting up and operating equipment, undertaking administrative and student supervision duties and participating in teaching activities.
AATS offers the following qualifications in Education Support:
The Certificate III in Education Support forms the first level of a study pathway through to Diploma in Education Support. It articulates into the Certificate IV and Diploma in Education Support.
Teacher aides have several ways to gain a Certificate III qualification:
- A teacher aide is eligible to be funded by their school to gain a Certificate III through a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) pathway. Many teacher aides will prefer to undertake coursework at an earlier stage in their career, but the RPL option is an entitlement under the Department of Education and the Arts Teacher Aides' Certified Agreement 2005.
- An alternative option makes use of an Existing Worker Traineeship to gain the 30613QLD Certificate III in Education Support. This option can be taken up after 3 months employment if the teacher aide meets eligibility requirements. From July 1st, 2008, Traineeships are available for all non-state schools only.
- If not eligible for a traineeship a teacher aide could enrol to do the course privately. Costs of the course may be claimed when submitting tax returns.
